Real Life

Why Choose Laminate?

Laminate makes sense for homeowners who want the appearance of hardwood without the maintenance requirements or price tag. It's built tough, with a wear layer that resists scratches, dents, and fading better than many hardwood floors. If you have kids, pets, or high-traffic areas, laminate holds up remarkably well.

Enduring Durability

For Denver-area homes, laminate performs well in our climate. It's more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood, meaning it handles temperature changes and dry winter air without major expansion or contraction issues.

Efficient Installation

Installation is straightforward and fast. Most laminate floors use a click-lock system that doesn't require nails, glue, or extensive subfloor preparation. This means we can often complete installations in a fraction of the time hardwood would take, and you can walk on your new floors almost immediately.

Aesthetic Variety

Laminate also offers incredible variety. Want wide-plank rustic oak? Smooth modern gray? Distressed farmhouse pine? Laminate manufacturers replicate virtually any wood species and style you can imagine. The high-resolution imaging and embossed textures on quality laminate make it hard to distinguish from real wood at a glance.

How Laminate Flooring Works

Understanding what laminate actually is helps explain why it performs so well. Laminate flooring consists of several layers pressed together:

01

Wear Layer

A clear, tough coating on top that protects against scratches, stains, and UV fading. This is rated by AC (Abrasion Criteria) ratings from AC1 to AC5, with higher numbers indicating greater durability.

02

Decorative Layer

High-resolution photograph of wood grain (or stone, or tile) that gives laminate its realistic appearance. Advanced printing technology and embossing techniques create texture that mimics real wood.

03

Core Layer

Typically high-density fiberboard (HDF) that provides stability and impact resistance. This is what makes laminate so durable.

04

Backing Layer

Adds moisture resistance and structural support.

Our Installation Process

We can typically install laminate in a fraction of the time hardwood requires. Second, it works over most existing floors, including concrete, vinyl, and even existing hardwood (with proper preparation). Third, if a plank ever gets damaged, replacement is relatively simple.

01. Subfloor Evaluation

We evaluate your subfloor to ensure it's clean, dry, and level. We install underlayment that provides cushioning, sound dampening, and moisture protection. Then we carefully plan the layout to minimize waste and ensure the planks run in the most visually appealing direction.

02. Floating Click-Lock

Laminate installation is one of the reasons this flooring is so popular. The planks click together and float over your existing subfloor, creating a stable floor without adhesives. This floating installation method has several advantages.

03. Professional Finishing

We pay close attention to transitions between rooms, around doorways, and at stairs. Professional installation makes the difference between laminate that looks DIY and laminate that looks like expensive hardwood.

Laminate vs. Vinyl vs. Hardwood

Since we install all three types of flooring, we can give you straight talk about how they compare.

Laminate vs. Vinyl

Both are affordable and durable, but they have different strengths. Laminate has a more authentic wood feel underfoot and generally looks more realistic in person. Vinyl is completely waterproof, making it better for bathrooms and basements. For main living areas, most people prefer the look and feel of laminate.

Laminate vs. Hardwood

Hardwood is real wood that can be refinished and adds more resale value. But laminate costs less, installs faster, resists scratches better, and requires less maintenance. It's also more consistent in appearance, without the natural variation in wood grain and color that some homeowners find unpredictable. For busy families or anyone on a budget, laminate delivers excellent value.

Style and Design Options

Today's laminate flooring comes in an incredible range of styles. We work with manufacturers who offer everything from traditional oak and maple to trendy gray-toned planks and exotic wood looks.

Plank widths range from narrow strips that mimic antique floors to wide planks popular in contemporary design. You can choose smooth finishes, hand-scraped textures, wire-brushed looks, or glossy surfaces. Some laminate even replicates the beveled edges and variation you'd find in real hardwood.

Beyond wood looks, laminate also comes in stone and tile patterns. These work well in entryways, kitchens, or anywhere you want the appearance of tile without the cold, hard surface or grout maintenance.

Maintaining Your Laminate Floors

One of laminate's biggest advantages is how little maintenance it requires. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris that can scratch the surface. For cleaning, use a damp (not wet) mop with laminate-specific cleaner. That's essentially it.

Don't use excessive water when cleaning laminate. While quality laminate is moisture-resistant, it's not waterproof like vinyl. Standing water can seep into seams and damage the core. Clean up spills promptly, and your laminate will last for years.

Use felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratching. Place mats at entrances to catch dirt. Avoid dragging heavy furniture or appliances across the floor. With these simple precautions, laminate flooring looks great for 15-25 years or more.

Unlike hardwood, laminate cannot be refinished. Once the wear layer is damaged, the plank needs replacement. However, quality laminate with an appropriate AC rating rarely shows significant wear even after years of use.
