Professional Subfloor Preparation in Denver & Surrounding Areas

We've spent over 10 years preparing subfloors throughout Denver and surrounding areas, and we've learned that proper preparation makes the difference between a floor that looks great for years and one that develops problems within months. Whether you're installing hardwood, laminate, or vinyl, we ensure your subfloor meets the highest industry standards before a single plank goes down.

Your flooring is only as good as What's underneath it

The Essential First Step

Why Subfloor Preparation Matters

Think of your subfloor as the foundation for your flooring investment. An uneven subfloor will telegraph through laminate and vinyl, creating visible dips and high spots. Moisture in a concrete subfloor can destroy hardwood from underneath. Squeaky or loose plywood will make your beautiful new floors creak and shift.

Proper subfloor preparation prevents these problems before they start. It ensures your flooring lays flat, stays stable, and performs as intended. Skipping or rushing this step to save money or time almost always leads to callbacks, repairs, or premature failure.

We've seen too many DIY installations and cut-rate contractor jobs that looked fine initially but developed issues because the subfloor wasn't properly addressed. We don't take shortcuts. Every installation we do starts with thorough subfloor evaluation and preparation.

Plywood Subfloor Preparation

Plywood subfloors are common in homes, especially on upper levels and main floors. While plywood provides a solid base, it often needs attention before flooring installation.

01

Leveling

We check for high and low spots using straightedges and levels. Industry standards require subfloors to be flat within 3/16" over 10 feet for most flooring types. Some manufacturers require even tighter tolerances. We sand down high spots and fill low areas with leveling compound to create a perfectly flat surface.

02

Securing

Loose or squeaky subfloors need to be secured before installation. We add screws to eliminate movement and quiet any squeaks. This is especially important for floating floors like laminate and some vinyl products, which can amplify subfloor noise.

03

Repairing

Damaged, water-stained, or rotted plywood gets replaced. We don't install over compromised subfloor. If there's evidence of past water damage, we investigate the source and ensure it's been resolved before proceeding.

04

Cleaning

We remove all debris, old adhesive, staples, and anything else that could interfere with installation. The subfloor needs to be completely clean for proper adhesion and to prevent irregularities from showing through.

Concrete Subfloor Preparation

Concrete subfloors present different challenges than plywood, and they require specific expertise and equipment. We handle concrete preparation for basements, commercial spaces, and slab foundations throughout the Denver metro area.

01

Moisture Testing

Excess moisture in concrete will destroy hardwood and can cause issues with other flooring types. We perform calcium chloride tests or use moisture meters to measure moisture vapor emission rates (MVER). If moisture levels are too high, we address the problem before installation or recommend moisture barriers and flooring types that can handle the conditions.

02

Leveling & Grinding

Concrete is rarely perfectly flat, especially in basements or older homes. We use diamond grinders to remove high spots and self-leveling compound to fill low areas. Some concrete floors have ridges from troweling or leftover adhesive from previous flooring. We grind these down to create a smooth, level surface.

03

Crack Repair

Cracks in concrete need to be filled and stabilized. We use appropriate fillers and techniques to prevent cracks from telegraphing through your new flooring or expanding over time.

04

pH Testing

High pH levels in concrete can interfere with adhesive bonding. We test pH and use primers or sealers when necessary to ensure proper adhesion.

05

Cleaning & Preparation

We thoroughly clean concrete subfloors, removing dust, oils, paint, and any contaminants. For glue-down installations, the surface must be completely clean for proper adhesion.

Moisture Management

Colorado's climate is generally dry, but basements and concrete slabs can still have moisture issues. We take moisture seriously because it's one of the leading causes of flooring failure.

For concrete subfloors, we use moisture barriers when needed. These specialized membranes prevent moisture vapor from reaching your flooring. In severe cases, we may recommend dehumidification or addressing drainage issues around your foundation before installing flooring.

For plywood subfloors, we ensure adequate ventilation in crawlspaces and check for signs of moisture intrusion. If we find problems, we'll let you know what needs to be addressed.

Subfloor Preparation by Flooring Type

Different flooring materials have different subfloor requirements. We tailor our preparation approach based on what you're installing.

Hardwood

Subfloors must be exceptionally flat, dry, and stable. We're particularly careful about moisture testing and ensuring proper ventilation in crawlspaces. Hardwood is less forgiving than other materials, so we hold ourselves to the tightest tolerances.

Laminate

Since laminate floats over the subfloor, perfect flatness is crucial. Any irregularities will create hollow spots or prevent planks from locking properly. We also install appropriate underlayment that provides cushioning and moisture protection.

Vinyl

Vinyl is more forgiving than laminate, but it still shows imperfections. We ensure the subfloor is smooth and level, paying special attention to removing any debris or high spots that could wear through the vinyl over time.
